Matador Press is located on North Congress Avenue, a blackberry-filled back alley in Portland, Oregon. The Matador (a.k.a. the Gentle Giant) is a 1920s era 12 x 18 C&P Craftsman press which at first appears more bull than matador, its operator more matador than bull. But so it is; tables turn.
This letterpress shop, binding, box making and art studio was raised in a valiant group effort in 2004 and made an official LLC in 2005 at the hands of Rachel Wiecking, sometime printer, binder, teacher, art experimenter who also endeavors to make a living doing what she loves.
Rachel also uses the Matador shop to experiment, innovate and produce her own art work. Both Rachel and her work appear in public occasionally, but usually not at the same time.
